The Great 3-D Glasses War of 2011, and 5 Other Stories You'll Be Talking About Today

Happy Thursday! Also in today’s edition of The Broadsheet: Paul Bettany has had enough… The only early Footloose review you’ll need… Gangster Squad gets a release date… How about them Red Sox?… and more. · Sony and the National Association of Theater Owners are engaged in what looks like (but seriously is so, so not) a mortal tussle over who will pay for the 3-D glasses that murk up and thwart so many contemporary big-screen viewing experiences. Tired of eating the cost, Sony has proposed that studios pass it on to the customer — a surcharge estimated to be about… wait for it… a dollar. Alternatively you can bring one of the myriad pairs you already have wedged in a junk drawer at home. (I think it’s called “recycling.”) Meanwhile, Real-D, which manufactures the glasses, saw a stock price plunge of almost 15 percent on Wednesday, and analysts and theater chains alike describe this development as being a sulfur plume shy of the apocalypse. Sony’s like, “Guys! Can’t we talk about this?” No! Get angry! Or something. I’m so tired. [Deadline] · In a new podcast, Paul Bettany confesses his wariness with Hollywood and suggests he might be on his way out: “It’s not noble. I can’t do it any longer.” He’s basically going to replace Andy Rooney, from the sounds of it. [The Guardian] · Get your calendars out! Warner Bros. has penciled in Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad — featuring Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone — for an awards-friendly Oct. 19 release date. [Deadline] · Dreading Footloose? This won’t help: “It’s an interminable 115 minutes filled with clichs, two leads who couldn’t act their way out of a wet sack if you gave them a knife and written directions, uninspired direction, and a determination to make its audience lose its faith in humanity.” [Pajiba] · Daughters — Hollywood’s next go-to archnemesis? Discuss. [Grantland] · Just to recap for anyone who missed last night’s extraordinary finish to Major League Baseball’s regular season: The St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays each won and advanced to their leagues’ respective wild-card rounds, the Atlanta Braves wiped out in the 13th inning and the Boston Red Sox completed the single worst September collapse in the history of the game. Literally unbelievable. [ESPN]

Obama back in Hollywood

President Obama returns to Los Angeles again today for two late-afternoon and early evening Hollywood-centric 2012 fund-raisers that once again are raising concerns of rush-hour traffic snarls. Obama is scheduled to appear at an event at the House of Blues, where tickets start at $250 per person and the lineup includes B.o.B, the Gay Men's Chorus, Adam 12 and "Modern Family" star Jesse Tyler Ferguson. He'll follow that event with a high-dollar event at Fig & Olive on Melrose Place, with tickets at $17,900 per person. West Hollywood city officials have been sending out notices to residents warning them of possible street closures, but as has been the case with Obama's previous visits, the Secret Service keeps information about motorcade routes closely guarded. Nevertheless, the city is closing parks and city offices early in anticipation of bottlenecks, and some schools were planning to end the day early to avoid the traffic. Obama's last fund-raising swing in April, when he appeared at late-afternoon and early-evening events at Sony Studios and the Brentwood eatery Tavern, was pulled off with relatively few complications. A visit in August 2010 had caught many commuters off guard as major arteries like Olympic Boulevard were closed at rush hour. The president has been on somewhat of a fund-raising tear to make up for a dormant period over the summer, as he wrangled with Republicans on a deal to raise the nation's debt ceiling. His events also will give him a chance to try to energize his Hollywood base of support, as some figures like Robert Redford and Matt Damon have expressed disappointment on issues like the environment and education. Given that it is still early and there is no Republican nominee, it is difficult to gauge at this point the impact on fund-raising in an industry that has been one of the most loyal bases of support for Democrats. Hollywood sources have contributed $6.8 million to Democrats this cycle, to $2.7 million to Republicans, a split of 71% to 29%, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Jeffrey Katzenberg and Michael Lynton are among Obama's campaign bundlers, and Harvey Weinstein hosted a fund-raiser for him in August. Katzenberg, Steve Bing and J.J. Abrams have been among big donors giving to independent expenditure groups supporting Democrats next year. Obama himself has acknowledged frustration, and it is expected that in his appearances on Monday he will take a more populist tone and highlight the differences with Republicans on issues like jobs and taxes. Greg Walker Teams With Ol For CBS Detective Drama, Richard Shepard To Direct

EXCLUSIVE: Former Without a Trace and The Defenders showrunner Greg Walker has sold a second drama project to CBS this season. Red on Red, from CBS TV Studios and Richard Shepard and Sean Furst and Bryan Furst’s Ol, is based on the book by Edward Conlon. It centers on a young hungry detective who is asked to inform on his new partner who is a legend in the NYPD. Walker is writing the script, with Shepard attached to direct. The two are executive producing with Sean & Bryan Furst. This is one of two sales Ol has made under the two-year deal with CBS Studios the company inked in June. It has sold another detective drama to CBS penned by Jennie Snyder-Urman (90210), who wrote Ol’s CW presentation Danni Lowinski last season. The untitled show is about a divorced husband-and-wife detective team in Miami who reunite to solve cases. For Walker, this also is the second drama project at CBS/CBS Studios this season. He also has Ralph Lamb, which he is co-writing with Goodfellas writer Nicholas Pileggi. James Mangold is attached to direct the show, which is based on the true story of Ralph Lamb, a cowboy-turned-Las Vegas sheriff in the 1960s and 70s. Red on Red is the first fiction book by Conlon, a detective with the NYPD who chronicled his experience as a fourth-generation NYPD cop in the memoir Blue Blood. Shepard won an Emmy for directing the pilot for Ugly Betty. He also helmed the pilots for Criminal Minds and its spinoff and, most recently, the pilot of the new CW drama Ringer, which premieres tonight. Walker and Ol are repped by WME. Snyder-Urman is repped by UTA.
