Brnice Bejo's Colorful Performance Lights up 'The Artist'
Brnice Bejo's Colorful Performance Lights up 'The Artist' By Jessica Gardner December 14, 2011 "The Artist" became the surprise hit of Cannes 2011 when Jean Dujardin nabbed the best actor award. But opposite Dujardin's charming silent-film star George Valentin was another standout performancethat of Brnice Bejo, whose chemistry with her leading man sparked through the screen of this silent movie and whose eyes glittered with personality, even in black and white.Much like her character, Peppy Miller, Bejo is quickly becoming a star. Having already made her mark in French films, this Argentinean-born actor may soon be a household name. Here are five things to know about Bejo:1. She had to get over extreme shyness to be an actor. At age 5, Bejo knew she wanted to be an actor, but she didn't tell her parents until she was 9. "I wouldn't show off for my parents' friends," she says. "I wouldn't put costumes on or anything like that. I knew it was something I wanted to do, but I was too shy for any of that." In Bejo's first role, in a short French film, the director couldn't cut to any close-ups of Bejo because she was so nervous and shaky that her head would go out of frame. "I would have heavy breathing, so I had to really work on that," she says. "I really enjoyed acting, but I was very nervous, trying to be good. Now I don't try to be good or to do the scene right; I'm just trying to work. I'm not anymore looking for a result, which I was when I was young. When you're young, you think you have to do it right, right away, and you forget there's editing. You don't have to do the whole scene all good. You can do a little bit here and a little piece there, and that's the magic of cinema. But when I was young, it was hard [to get over that]."2. She felt serious pressure to perform well in "The Artist." One would think that if a director who was also your husband wrote you a leading role in his film, playing the part would be easy. But Bejowho was starring in a role that her husband, Michel Hazanavicius, had written for herwas stressed at the start of filming. She knew how much work her husband had put into the script, how much time he'd spent raising the money for it, and how important the film was to him. It was difficult for her to loosen up and focus on her role in the first week. "I just wanted to please him so much," she says. She also worried that the crew and the rest of the cast would think of her as just the director's wife and not as a serious actor, even though she had been successful in France for years before she even met her husband. When it was time to shoot her first big scene, Bejo says, it felt like an audition: "I wanted to show everybody that I'm an actress and I'm here for a good reason." She says Hazanavicius said to her: "Relax. You're good. Don't worry. Just focus on your work." Knowing she had his support, she let the pressure go, and, thankfully, she says, everything went well from then on.3. She thinks John Goodman is cute. She loves the scene in which Peppy and George fall in love while doing a take over and over, but Bejo admits that her favorite scene to shoot was her blackmail scene with a studio head played by John Goodman. "I love John," she says. "He was great. He was so cute! He's such a good actor. I didn't have to do anything except look at him and try to seduce him, and it came out great. I loved working with him."4. She got into character by telling Peppy's story over and over. For "The Artist," Bejo worked with an acting coach who asked her on the first day to tell him the story of her character. "It was such a mess," she says. After two weeks of working together, he asked her to tell him Peppy's story again, this time from Peppy's perspective, such as "I went to see a movie with George Valentin." "It totally changed my point of view," Bejo remembers. "I had emotions in every special moment and cried while I was telling the story." At the end of her work with her coach, she truly felt like she was Peppy: "I was like an old woman talking about myself when I was younger and telling the story."5. A painting at the Louvre will always remind her of "The Artist." On Bejo's last day of coaching before filming "The Artist," her coach took her to the Louvre. They were walking around and talking about her character when a big painting caught her eye. They walked over to it and saw that it was Caravaggio's "The Fortune Teller," which in French was translated as "The Good Fortune." Her coach looked at her and said, "Whenever you feel like you're scared, just think about this painting. It's good fortune." Guy Ritchie on Madonna: 'I Sort of Encouraged Her to be Interested in Film'
In a twist that could only come out of Hollywood, Guy Ritchie and his former spouse -- a little someone named Madonna -- have new films arriving within weeks of each other. In limited release now is 'W.E.,' Madonna's time-spanning romance about King Edward VIII and his lover, Wallis Simpson (the film arrives in a more expanded capacity in 2012); out Friday is Ritchie's sequel to the mega-blockbuster, 'Sherlock Holmes.' So, apples to oranges. But! A chance to ask Ritchie about his feelings on Madonna, the filmmaker -- something he was happy to answer for Movieline. "I don't know, she's always been interested in film," Ritchie told Jen Yamato at Movieline. "Actually, I sort of encouraged her to be interested in film and she used quite a lot of my crew on her film. I haven't seen her film and I haven't read her script so it's hard for me to comment, but I wish her the best with it." As for his comments earlier this year that his marriage to Madonna was like a "soap opera," Ritchie said that most relationships are to an extent. "I think most people's marriages are like soap operas so I don't know if I'm unique in that sense, to a degree, but I suppose it was exceptionally operatic. [Smiles] But then as I say I suppose everyone's is at some point or another." Check out the full interview with Ritchie over at Movieline. Supernatural Episode Recap: "Death's Door"
Bobby. Bobby. Bobby. Our favorite gruff father figure/hunter is at "Death's Door." Again. Things are looking serious and permanent after being shot in the head in "How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters." While Bobby's in a coma, a reaper visits him, which is never a good sign. And as he experiences some of his life's greatest (and worst) hits and tries to find a way to get some essential Leviathan intel to Sam and Dean, we find out a lot about the character and proceed to get all teary-eyed in the process. The last Supernatural of 2011 is a very emotional episode. Jim Beaver does an excellent job of conveying a man desperate to outwit, outlast and outplay a reaper who's after Bobby. In order to figure out a way to get back to the boys and give them some much needed information he got while in Leviathan captivity, he has to work through some painful memories. But reliving his worst memory may be the key to getting back to the boys. Steven Williams is back for "Death's Door." I'm still (more than) a little bitter over Rufus having been killed off in Season 6 but at least this look through Bobby's brain includes seeing Bobby & Rufus in action as ghost-hunting partners. Rufus also ends up accompanying Singer on this look through his "fruitcake" and acts as sort of a guide. It's good to see Rufus return although what was up with that earring? It was dangling. A couple running themes develop. Something that keeps getting repeated is Bobby "breaks" everything he touches. Also, the ghost he and Rufus are trying to rid the world of calls him a heart breaker. And his wife tells him he broke her heart. Poor Bobby. So many reasons add up to why he's pretty much broken on the inside. Thanks to his abusive childhood, he's damaged. He has an alcoholic for a dad and a victimized enabler of a mom that keeps making excuses and blaming her son for his dad's abusive behavior. The kid can't do anything without the dad taking it out on his family. In this very "Eternal friggin' Sunshine" look through Bobby's mind, it's going from one memory to another to another so fast I'm not always sure what is real. Like when a young Bobby shoots his dad after the adult Bobby finally confronts him. Did that really happen? Did Bobby really shoot and kill his dad when he was so young? And then when he was an adult he had to kill his possessed wife? So unfair. Like the reaper said, he's "about the only case of genetic bullet-in-the-brain he's ever seen." He also hits the bottle a little too much like his father. No wonder Bobby didn't want to have any kids. And that's the big revelation we learned concerning his wife. She realized Bobby didn't want to have any kids and felt betrayed and her heart broke because she wanted them badly and he knew she did. We learn she got possessed only three days after their confrontation and now we know why. She was more susceptible to being taken over because of her fragile state of mind. Bobby blames himself for what happened to his wife. After all, he does break everything he touches. The other theme that develops is not a new one. It just gets fleshed out more. Bobby's relationship with Sam and Dean is probably the most significant relationship of his life other than the one with his wife. And I just got a little teary writing that sentence which is crazy. One of the memories we see is Bobby and Dean in a park. Per John's orders, Dean's supposed to be practicing to shoot double-barrel shotguns but Bobby takes him to play catch. Later, he even has to defend himself to John about playing catch with Dean instead of training him. We learn how important the boys are to him throughout the episode but more on that a little later. First, let's take a break from Bobby's noggin' and discuss what's going on in the real world. Sam and Dean are understandably worried and upset and concerned for their "uncle." Sam doesn't move far from Bobby's room. There's definitely a lot simmering underneath but he's in control. At one point, he's working that scar on his hand so he's probably seeing Lucifer and trying to make things go away. Sam also wants to talk to Dean about what they're going to have to do if/when Bobby dies. Sam's just trying to be realistic. Dean's the exact opposite of course. He's moving around a lot, his tension is right at the surface and he looks like he's ready to blow at any second. When that hospital administrator talks to Bobby's next of kin (Dean) about Mr. Singer donating his organs, Dean punches the wall and tells the guy to get away from him. Good move, guy. Then he goes outside where he sees the smuggy smuggerson known as Leviathan Dick Roman. Dean's trying to provoke some sort of reaction but Dick doesn't budge. He tells Dean to go check on Bobby. After all, he's a very good shot. There were a few moments that made me tear up. I know I probably wasn't the only one: "You've done enough. Believe me." "I don't care." "Why?" "Because they're my boys." Bobby wakes up and writes the numbers (the Leviathan intel) on Sam's hand. He musters up the strength to say "idjits" and then immediately starts to flatline. "You break everything you touch." "Uh huh. Well, as fate would have it, I adopted two boys and they grew up great. They grew up heroes! So you can go to hell!" "They'll be OK without you." "Last memory, huh? Glad I saved the best for last." Bobby walks into the room where Sam and Dean are quarreling like brothers over menial things. Dean wants Sam to show "his elders some respect" and Sam calls Dean an "a--hat." It's nice to see them that way. Bobby thinks so too. All he can do is sit back and drink it all in. And then the brothers disappear, the bullet melting his memories away. The reaper shows up once more and says: "Well, Bobby? Stay or go. What's it going to be?" Credits. My issue with "Death's Door": Other than the cliff-hanger ending, this didn't really seem like a midseason finale to me. Other than Bobby getting the numbers to Sam and Dean, it didn't really move any big picture action forward very much. That's cool for regular weekly episodes but for a midseason finale, I expect a little more Random Thoughts -They went all CSI a couple times to show the path the bullet went through Bobby's brain, didn't they? -How many times did Bobby say "balls?" -Big Daddy Winchester is again made to look like a bad dad. If Jeffrey Dean Morgan ever shows up to play John again (and I sincerely hope he does), I wonder how the show's going to handle this? The boys have a lot to be angry about. And I want to see it all play out. Just like Bobby got to do with his dad. -Obviously Ridge Canipe is too old to play the young Dean Winchester needed in this flashback (he's 17 now). But it was still odd to see a new kid actor playing him. Seeing Bobby and Dean play catch is a great moment but I was slightly taken out of it because this kid looks so different from Ridge. -Again, James Patrick Stuart excels at making this guy super smarmy. I don't know how he does it. -Dean and Sam were debating the skills of Chuck Norris versus Jet Li. And then during one of the commercial breaks was an ad for something that featured Chuck Norris. Weird. -How sad was it when things kept disappearing in Bobby's limbo-land? It's because his brain matter was disappearing. Boo. -Numbers on Supernatural? Seems more like Lost. -Dean loves licorice and Sam loves peanut butter and banana sandwiches? How did we not know this before? -Love how clever Bobby was in trapping the reaper. Of course, he admitted he had learned a bit from Sam and Dean's dealings with reapers. This episode did remind me of "In My Time of Dying" in more ways than one. Sam and Dean waiting helplessly as their father (or father figure) flatlines. Wanting to return because they're needed. The reaper trying to take care of business and then being thwarted. Or in this case, possibly thwarted. We won't know for sure until Friday January 6, 2012. Talk to you guys then. Let the winter hellatus begin. show less

Fashion Slam: Holiday Sales Bargain Bonanza Or Bust?
First Released: November 29, 2011 11:48 AM EST Credit: Getty Images Caption Consumers hit the shops looking for some good holiday deals!La, Calif. -- How have you use the vacation sales? I must admit, I am not among individuals people whos gonna wait at night time in order to save 50 dollars on the TV. I'm apparently within the minority though since Black Friday was the greatest shopping day on record with $52 billion in sales. Used to do, however, hit a couple of stores throughout reasonable daylight hrs! I had been amazed in the Grove shopping complex in La. I figured it might be insane finding parking and fighting crowds, however it was simple and easy , not irritatingly crowded. Really, it had been pretty festive there, everybody appeared to stay in the vacation spiritnone from the fighting you saw in the news! J. Crew were built with a good purchase and thus did The Space. I acquired a few gifts, but mostly clothes for my hubby and daughter. I additionally hit a few trendy stores in Beverly Hillsides and also the salesgirl at one trendy mall explained she was embarrassed because nothing was on purchase and clients were very disappointed. I kinda felt exactly the same way. Anticipointment is really a word we use within television and also the same might be stated for that sales. More hype and hoopla than anything. The salesgirl did let me know concerning the large purchase on internet-a-porter.com and so i visited and located an Alexander McQueen scarf which i had just observed in a Beverly Hillsides boutique at full cost, that was half off on the website! Im loving Cyber Monday! (Which, BTW, introduced within an believed $1.2 billion.) Used to do a fast informal poll round the office to determine how others worked out and when they hit the sales. I did not I cant handle packed malls, one producer explained along with a couple of others remained away too. A few people did pretty much though. Our producers, Sharon, hit the Westfield Topanga shopping town. Typically, it had been too crowded that i can would like to try anything onbut at Express, I purchased a shirt and my sister bought a set of pantscombined togethershirt ended up being free because of purchase and coupons! Disney Store sales were good and that i purchased a 10 dollar nightgown for my niece. My sister did perfectly at Targetbuying some kids games for any toy drive in school for $3.99. Colliege Ashley also did well at Target, finding a set of Missoni houses for 7 dollars! Score! Anthony within our photo department states since i have camped out for that H&M Versace line the Saturday before, I felt like I already did Black Friday LOLOL! But, Used to do mind to Macys on Black Friday to obtain some Christmas Lenox China and table linens which were on special each morning. 60 percent off, and that i eliminate coupons in the paper that gave you additional savings before 1pm. Used to do just a little me shopping, Terri within our NY office states. I went in to the Gap on my small corner at 8:30amto grab a couple of pairs of 1969 jeans (my fave) at $19. I additionally did some me shopping on Small Company Saturday, when my hubby, daughter and that i hit adorable Larchmont Boulevard in La. All the stores were getting sales even though they arent in a position to slash prices such as the large men, they create up for this with awesome personal customer support, free offer wrapping and holiday snacks. Shawn Stockmans Sing-Off Blog: What Must Be Done To Really Make It!
First Released: November 23, 2011 3:44 PM EST Credit: Getty Premium La, Calif. -- Caption Shawn Stockman carrying out in the 2011 Essence Music Festival in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans on This summer 1, 2011. Hey gang, Well, which was undoubtedly probably the most emotional evening from the Sing-Off I'd this year. The shows outcome, although questionable using the audiences, took it's origin from a couple of factors. But to ensure that you to definitely know very well what Im going to if you have to begin right from the start. First of all, a cappella, as old because the talent is, still so far as mainstream music is worried, uncharted territory. Because of the show, its in a time of re-innovation, but it'll inspire others to wish to collect up a couple of buddies and begin practicing within their houses to develop something much more leading edge! Information passes so rapidly nowadays, therefore if an organization already is able to sing, you will find countless references to hone their abilities! I only say all this to express, if this involves a cappella music, who the hell knows what's going to work?! I had been just treated this year by groups who made sounds I i never thought was possible related to the mouth, an organization that incorporated stylish-hop and really managed to get seem awesome, a genuine existence college ska-cappella type group, a lady group who designed a cappella look AND seem more sexy of computer ever has a lot of components I'd haven't imagined might be possible, I had been so pleasantly proven wrong! However I digress. For anybody, including myself, to consider ultimately that certain factor works over another could be totally self-righteous for me. Then when decreasing towards the final three, you need to search for who had been either probably the most consistent on the program, or those who demonstrated probably the most growth! The ultimate three are the type who represent individuals two points. Now, I am unable to continue this web site without responding to the question which was most requested on my small twitter page, Why did the idol judges let AFRO-BLUE go? Here's why: Right from the start from the show, I LOVED AFRO-BLUE and that i still do! They so brought to mind things i was raised on hearing in addition to being around groups simmer to that particular after i was becoming an adult! Amazing, intricate, soulful harmonies, and jaw shedding leads that helped me think in the beginning, These men will go completely within this competition! Because the days passed, and that we began to visit music that required All the groups completely from their safe place, rather than AB dealing with the task to do a rock or stylish-hop song, they allow the song challenges intimidate them! Nearly every group pointed out within the packages before they'd perform something similar to We never sang a (blank) record before, however the difference a number of ABs performances was which i felt they werent assertive. They allow the song beat them rather than them beating the song. Actually, far as vocal ability and natural splendor within their harmonies, Ill put AB facing the best every day. But this can be a competition!! Its for that groups to throw all hang-ups towards the wind and choose the things they know. There have been certain episodes where they certainly fell. Now all of the groups on the program let you know, sometimes my co-idol judges and that i would speak with all of the groups at the same time prior to the show tapings. We'd let them know not to hesitate to complete the things they came completely to La to complete and go available and blow the mobile phone industry's minds!! Some required heed to that particular advice rapidly, others it may take them a little longer to learn how to get it done. So that as amazing and soul stirring ABs last performances were, as compared to the other groups who demonstrated growth as well as consistency, it had been too late. As well as in as being a fair judge, you need to award individuals who demonstrated probably the most promise through the days. The breakout group within this whole competition was URBAN METHOD. Make up the gate, they'd a couple of strikes against them far when i was concerned: first strike was getting a rapper within an a cappella group. I believe I instantly thought, This will probably be corny as hell! However when I heard my guy Myke and saw his conviction and just how his group backed him up that didnt resonate as corny whatsoever, my take on the audience began to alter, However I STILL wasnt convinced. Mainly due to their lead singer. Beginning off they didnt leave a lot of an impact, and that i felt these were leaning an excessive amount of on Mykes charisma to hold them. However with each week they were given better, and. They shipped the tunes in ways where it had been listenable, fun, had attitude, And that we saw before our eyes Katie, our little female singer who had been inside a conk spend the very first couple of days, shed her skin and demonstrated us idol judges she'd some chops and demonstrated some star energy! URBAN METHOD developed, plus they never folded their tents and shipped some of their tunes flimsy. THE DARTMOUTH AIRES only agreed to be pure entertainment from starting to finish! Were in business now where artists these day are signed as to the is known as a 360 deal, where companies be part of the reeve from the artists merchandise, touring AND tracks! After I begin to see the DAs I simply dont visit a recording contract, I see advertising, Broadway, along with a standout star within the lead singer Michael! They demonstrated depth, range, levels and lows. Consistent from the beginning. Not to mention, you've PENTATONIX! A five person vocal group that has taken this show to a different level! Front guy Scott Hoying, Mitch and Kristins beautiful voices and Kevin and Avi who I nicknamed the Meat and Taters from the group have opened up my eyes towards the options of the cappella being not only some shoo-bee-doos plus some wah-wahs! They're what my co-judge Sara states SICK! Its one factor to declare youre this kind or that kind of group, nevertheless its another to increase towards the challenge and undertake an application you won't ever might have thought you might take due to the dynamics of the show! Just request last years champs COMMITTED: Gospel boys, never sang secular music like a group within their lives, whose first song on the program was This Love by Maroon 5!! With this performance, they'd haven't convinced me they simply sing gospel basically didnt know the reality. I search for that commitment in most the groups. That throw caution towards the wind type attitude and merely go for this! A chance to be diverse! AB certainly has their niche, but they may be effective at this niche. Much like In my opinion Vocal Point, Delilah, North Shoreline, DelTones, the YellowJackets, The Fannin Family, Kinfolk 9, Messiahs Males, The Felines Pajamas, The Collective, Sonos, and Sould Out have the opportunity, Hopefully with the expertise of being part of being something even more than the things they even thought. It is not about only the competition, its concerning the journey! And so far as my decision to help keep AB and my co-idol judges felt otherwise, I had been upset, however i are evident, and that i ride with my co-idol judges! SO, the FINALE is next! Ill literally be flying from Asia to visit right to set to film this exciting live broadcast! I cant wait to determine my good buddies from the cast And also the crew, the very best males and ladies focusing on television. I must shout you out of trouble because you earn this experience for me personally INCREDIBLE!! And congratulations towards the FINAL THREE, PENTATONIX, URBAN METHOD, and also the DARTMOUTH AIRES! You undoubtedly should be around! Best of luck, it is not within the idol judges hands any longer! Shout to Robert Graham, Jed Clothing, the Jordan Company, Nordstroms and Adidas to make me look great, and my amazing wife Sharhonda for putting it altogether. To my mgr Joe Mulvihill, thank you for causeing this to be crazy schedule of mine work, Whitney Fatone for getting my back, Joanna Mignano, finest PR on the planet, ICM not to mention Joel Gallen and NBC for that love! The way forward for MUSIC looks vibrant where I stand! And it is due to some crusaders who do not need music whatsoever!! Yet another blog and that i will help you all for Season FOUR!! -SHAWN Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Corporation. All privileges reserved. Weekend Box Office: 'Breaking Dawn' Breaks Large, While 'Happy Ft Two' Stumbles
Okay, all of us understood that 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Beginning Part 1' would be huge really the only suspense was: will it be record-breaking huge? (Early answer: Apparently not.) The larger shockers were the failure of 'Happy Ft Two' to spread out anywhere close to the levels of their smash predecessor, and also the stunning success (for any glum indie Oscar hopeful using a number of screens) of George Clooney's 'The Descendants.' 'Breaking Dawn' did break the franchise's own record because of its opening night time screening, which gained $30.25 million within the wee hrs of Friday morning (edging the $$ 30 million benchmark set by 'Eclipse'). And it is total take Friday of $72 million was the 3rd biggest single-day gross ever, behind the franchise's own 'New Moon' ($72.7 million) and 'Harry Potter and also the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($91 million). Still, amounts like this must have led to a weekend total around $148 million. Rather, distributor Summit is calculating a dent at $139.5 million. That's lacking the $142.8 million franchise record set two payments ago by 'New Moon.' It is possible that word-of-mouth on that one is not as strong not surprisingly. (Only at that writing, Moviefone's own informal survey finds 'Breaking Dawn' audiences either exuberantly passionate or bitterly disappointed, with raves outnumbering pans a couple of-to-1.) It is also entirely possible that some adults and children required the PG-13 rating seriously and remained away, considering that this installment is a lot more frank, disturbing, and gory compared to first three movies if this involves subjects of sex, pregnancy, and giving birth. Now, $139.5 million is almost not a disappointment, particularly when put into overseas grosses for any worldwide debut amassing $283.5 million. Nevertheless, with several large holiday movies opening within the next handful of days, 'Breaking Dawn' is not situated in addition to it may be for that sharp dropoff prone to stop by the Christmas. Incidentally, Taylor Lautner's thriller 'Abduction' has gained an believed $27.six million up to now, grossing about just as much over nine days as 'Breaking Dawn' did when Lautner first required his shirt off throughout Friday's first screening. Nobody expected the dancing penguins of 'Happy Ft Two' to become any type of competition for to begin with, however, many commentators did expect it to compete positively using the original, which first showed at $41.5 million 5 years ago. In the end, that one had much of the identical cast, similarly striking Antarctic pictures, and three dimensional taxes going for this. Around the minus side, 5 years is really a very long time between sequels for any family movie many kids who admired the flightless fowl in those days have graduated towards the relatively chaste vampires of the underworld and werewolves of 'Twilight.' Also, the penguin craze has cooled since 'March from the Penguins' and 'Happy Feet' ruled this area office. Reviews were not as strong this time around out. Finally, the follow up faced stiff competition not only from 'Breaking Beginning,' but additionally from fellow family toon 'Puss in Boots,' still holding its very own after four days in theaters. Consequently, 'Happy Ft Two' needed to be satisfied with another-place debut believed at $22. million, about 50 % the outlet take the original loved. Last week's champion, 'Immortals,' faced a steep drop, as action epics often do on the second weekends. It lost 62 percent of last week's business and required third place by having an believed $12.3 million. (You would not think the macho 'Immortals' and also the oestrogen-heavy 'Breaking Dawn' could be competing for the similar audience, however the men who pulled their dates to determine the nasty Greek epic a week ago most likely came back the favor now for that similarly bloody birth of Bella's baby.) In ten days, 'Immortals' has made $53. million. Adam Sandler movies also typically lose half their business the 2nd week therefore it was with 'Jack and Jill,' which rejected 52 percent dropped to 4th put on believed earnings of $12. million. In 2 days, the comedy has had in $41. million. In the 4th week, 'Puss in Boots' arrived fifth by having an believed $10.7 million, lower 57 percent from last week. In four days, the 'Shrek' spinoff has gained $122.3 million. Clooney's 'The Descendants' handled to hack the very best 10 despite the fact that it is a heavy-designed grown-up movie using just 29 screens. It gained an believed $1.two million over the past weekend, meaning a massive $42,150 per venue. Include that to the earnings since its solid early opening on Wednesday, and you've got an overall total take of $1.3 million. 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Beginning Part 1' - Trailer No. 2 The entire top ten: 1. 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Beginning Part 1,' $139.5 million (4,061 screens), era 2. 'Happy Ft Two,' $22. million (3,606), era 3. 'Immortals,' $12.3 million (3,120), $53. million total 4. 'Jack and Jill,' $12. million (3,438), $41. million 5. 'Puss in Boots,' $10.7 million (3,415), $122.3 million 6. 'Tower Heist,' $7. million (2.942), $53.4 million 7. 'J. Edgar,' $5.9 million (1,947), $20.7 million 8. 'A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas,' $2.9 million (1,808), $28.3 million 9. 'In Time,' $1.7 million (1,367), $33.4 million 10. Contender: 'My Week with Marilyn'
'My Week with Marilyn' Browse the Variety reviewArguably probably the most worshipful biopics a good actor up to now, "My Week With Marilyn" recalls the time in Marilyn Monroe's career when she shot "The Prince and also the Showgirl" at Pinewood Galleries outdoors based in london, with co-star Laurence Olivier doubling as director. In ways, the film is really as much concerning the contrast between your American-styled Method acting, as fitfully practiced by Monroe, and also the typically trained Britons who praised in the London stage, because it is an intimate remembrance of things past with different memoir by Colin Clark (performed by Eddie Redmayne).Two-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams plays Monroe using the requisite mixture of fragility, insecurity and sexual self-awareness. She adds credibility towards the dangerous task of representing a screen icon by singing her very own musical amounts, even when die-hard Monroe fans would take problem together with her capability to approximate the actual Marilyn's luminous screen presence, that is indisputable within the 1957 film.Kenneth Branagh, themself a four-time Oscar finalist, physically and vocally transforms themself in to the imperious Olivier -- much in the manner that Christian McKay lived on the bigger-than-existence title character in "Me and Orson Welles" (2008) -- even lower to Olivier's thin-lipped scowl. Fox Business Funnel Rankings Still Dismal After 4 Years
It had been an abysmal month for Fox News' youthful brother or sister funnel. Fox Business Network saw a typical daily viewership close to 65,000 for October, based on Nielsen, that also been the month from the network's four-year anniversary. In the target 25-54 demo, though, Fox Business only came typically 10,000 audiences daily. This, in comparison towards the network's chief competitor, CNBC, which saw around 201,000 audiences normally and 59,000 within the 25-54 age bracket. A resource acquainted with the network states that 4 years in, they expected Fox Business to become carrying out "much better than 10,000 within the target demo." PHOTOS: Probably The Most Spoken-About TV News Faces Contributing to the network's worries is always that Don Imus' program, Imus each morning, which Fox Business first showed last year because the network's daily morning kickoff program, is carrying out totally -- with typically just 5,000 daily audiences within the target demographic for that month and 90,000 total audiences. In comparison, Squawk Box, which airs on FBN's chief competitor CNBC simultaneously as Imus' show, received 179,000 total audiences normally for that month and outdelivered Imus within the target demographic by a lot more than 1,100 %, with 65,000 audiences. There's one relatively vibrant place for Fox Business -- its early prime-time 4 p.m.-8 p.m. slate, including shows like Cavuto and Lou Dobbs Tonight. The network drawn around 85,000 average daily audiences for that month, including 12,000 audiences in the target demographic, throughout individuals hrs. But even that figure continues to be well behind the 212,000 total audiences CNBC received for your same time slot. Fox Business Network executive v . p . Kevin Magee is attempting to place an optimistic spin around the amounts, saying things aren't badly because they appear. "I usually want better rankings than I've,Inch he told Adweek. "[But] the popularity expires for all of us.Inch Magee stated the network's rankings are "considerably up from October last year -Up 38 percent year upon year.Inch For the network's rankings in comparison to the competition, Magee downplayed the significance of target demographic rankings altogether, saying, "I'd professionally tell you just how the particular makeup in our audience is fairly terrific. We now have probably the most affluent audience in fundamental cable. We have got individuals with money, and that we attract some very, high-finish marketers." Calculating success based on if the network is reaching it is the 25-54 age bracket "may be an outdated measurement," Magee stated. STORY: Moguls Share A Common Television Channels The rankings trouble at Fox Business follows around the heels of the incident earlier within the month when Reuters acquired a memo Magee had sent the network's staff instructing these to focus a lot more on business news and a smaller amount around the kind of political fodder that's become Fox News Funnel's signature. "I've been requested to help remind all of you again that they're separate channels, and also the more we make [Fox Business Network] seem like [Fox News Funnel] the greater of the injustice we all do to ourselves," Reuters cited Magee as writing within the memo. "I realize the temptation to mimic our brother or sister network expecting emulating its success, but we can't.Inch That note to staff brought some to wonder if Fox News chief Roger Ailes was searching to create Fox Business Network on something of the course correction. In talking to Adweek, Magee searched for to understate the significance of what he'd written. "I believe the memo got a bit more play of computer deserved," he stated. "We now have stated right from the start that we must function as the Fox Business Network." For whether he's pleased with Imus, that has fought gossips surrounding his employment in the network previously, Magee stated, "Don introduced a crowd to us that people wouldn't have become otherwise . . . I'm not out thinking, 'I need to replace Imus.' Incidentally, he's on the contract. There's this too.Inch Related Subjects Fox Business Funnel

Defense Witness: Michael Jackson Triggered Own Dying
First Launched: October 29, 2011 12:04 PM EDT Credit: Getty Images La, Calif. -- Caption Michael Jackson rehearses for his planned shows london within the Staples Center in La on June 23, 2009With dramatic court room testimony, lawyers for Michael Jacksons physician have dropped the bombshell theyve been hinting at for many days a professional opinion accusing the singer of leading to their personal dying. Dr. Paul White-colored mentioned Jackson injected themselves getting a dose of propofol following a preliminary dose by Dr. Conrad Murray used off. More youthful crowd calculated that Jackson gave themselves another sedative, lorazepam, for pills after an infusion of the drug while others by Murray not successful to put him to relaxation. That combination of drugs may have had lethal effects, the defense teams star scientific witness mentioned Friday. Murray has pleaded not prone to involuntary wrongful dying. White-colored shown jurors numerous charts and simulations he created formerly a couple of days to assist the defense theory. More youthful crowd did a court room illustration showing how a milky white-colored anesthetic propofol may have became a member of Jacksons veins inside the small dose that Murray mentioned he gave the insomniac star. White-colored mentioned he recognized Murrays statement to police he given only 25 mg of propofol carrying out a evening-extended find it hard to get Jackson to relaxation with infusions of other sedative drugs. How extended would that (propofol) have observed an effect on Mr. Jackson? asked for defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan. If you're speaking effect on the central nervous system, ten to a quarter-hour max, White-colored mentioned. He then mentioned Jackson may have injected themselves with another 25 mg throughout time Murray has mentioned he left the entertainers room. And that means you think it absolutely was self-injected propofol between 11:30 and 12? asked for Flanagan. For me personally, yes, White-colored mentioned. The witness, one of the early researchers in the anesthetic, contradicted testimony by Dr. Steven Shafer, his longtime friend and collaborator. Shafer earlier stated Jackson might have been groggy all of the medications he was handed through the evening and could not need given themselves the drug inside the two minutes Murray mentioned he disappeared. He cant give themselves a go if hes asleep, Shafer told jurors the other day. He referred to as defense theory of self-administration crazy. Whites testimony belied no bitterness involving the two experts, who've labored together for thirty years. Although White-colored was referred to as through the judge eventually to create derogatory comments with a TV reporter in regards to the prosecution situation, White-colored was sincere and soft spoken round the witness stand. When Flanagan developed a mistake and referred to as him Dr. Shafer a few occasions, White-colored mentioned, Im honored. The prosecution asked for more hours to examine laptop computer program White-colored used before mix-examining him. Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor granted the request, saying he too was baffled with the complicated simulations of Jacksons fatal dose. He recessed court early and gave prosecutors the weekend capture up before questioning White-colored on Monday. The surprise disclosure of Whites new theory triggered an interruption in the court schedule, as well as the judge had worried aloud that jurors, who expected the trial being over now, were being inconvenienced. Nevertheless the seven males and five women came out active in the testimony and offered no complaints when the judge apologized for your delay. Prosecutors could call Shafer back in their rebuttal situation to resolve Whites claims. Among the key issues happens when White-colored calculated the large residue of propofol in Jacksons body may have vary from small dose that Murray states he given. Shafer assumed Murray had lied, which he thought Jackson actually was handed 1,000 mg in the drug by Murray, who he mentioned left the bottle running into an IV tube beneath the pull of gravity. White-colored disputed that, saying one more 25 mg self-distributed by Jackson might be enough to offer the amount contained in his blood stream and urine. White-colored also mentioned a minuscule residue in the sedative lorazepam in Jacksons stomach convinced him the singer needed some pills in the prescription bottle contained in his room. He suggested the mix of lorazepam, another sedative, midazolam, along with the propofol may have destroyed Jackson. It potentially may have lethal effects, mentioned White-colored. In my opinion the mix effect is quite, very profound. Whites testimony was prone to finish Murrays defense situation after 16 witnesses. It in most probability will probably be intensely challenged by prosecutors, who spent four days setting up their situation that Murray can be a greedy, inept and reckless physician who was simply giving Jackson propofol just like a sleep aided within the entertainers mattress room. Experts including Shafer have mentioned propofol is not designed to treat insomnia and should not be gave in a home. Whites theory required it's origin from urine and blood stream levels in Jacksons autopsy, evidence contained in Jacksons mattress room and Murrays extended interview with police detectives a couple of days after Jackson died throughout his care. While accepting Murrays account of medication he gave Jackson, professionals information hinged round the invisible quotient: Jacksons possible actions while his physician was in the room. With no witnesses and contradictory physical evidence, that's the key factor question hanging inside the situation. People who understood the artist within the final days offered a portrait from the guy held by fear he wouldn't meet large plans for his comeback concert and worried about his capacity to do if he didnt get sleep. The New York Times Investigates 'Neo-VHS' Culture
What is this strange retro fascination the kids have these days with watching old crappy horror movies on — what was it called again? V-H-S? The NY Times investigates. “I like putting it in the VCR and rewinding and pausing and fast-forwarding,” said Lunchmeat founder Josh Shafer. “The best way to watch is to know nothing about how it was created, like it was a tape that was found buried in a ditch or was found unmarked at a Goodwill,” explains Drafthouse Films’ Evan Husney. See kids, once upon a time there were these things called videotapes… that you rented from video stores… before the internet existed. Yes, I know. That’s a lot to digest. Let the nice Gray Lady explain it to you. [NYT]

REVIEW: Not Only Your Average Remake, Footloose Has All of the Right Moves
God save Craig Maker’s Footloose, that is less a film for today’s audiences compared to yesterday’s — and that i imply that within the great way. This can be a pop entertainment created using a watch for detail: When our teen hero and also the youthful lady he’s been wooing relocate for his or her first hug, the sundown peeps from behind their conjoined silhouettes. Corny, right? Understand this: The sun rays beam out via a star filter. You are able to roll your vision in the obviousness from it all, or else you can marvel that the filmmaker cared to select so traditional, so clichd, it turns into a type of pop-culture mission statement. It’s as though Maker takes a are a symbol of movies that appear to be like movies rather than audience hipness barometers. Maker designed a splash in 2005 using the well-received Hustle & Flow, as well as in 2006 thrown away all of the goodwill he’d gained from audiences and experts with Black Lizard Moan, a level better and more daring movie with Southern scriptural righteousness deep in the soul. (Plenty of audiences appeared to have a problem with the thought of Christina Ricci’s being chained to some radiator by Samuel L. Jackson, but poor the storyline and it is setting, the look was hardly gratuitous.) Maker, who spent the majority of his childhood in Memphis, is among the couple of contemporary filmmakers I understand of who are able to make movies concerning the South without sentimentalizing it, glorifying it or searching lower onto it. Which might be area of the reason this new Footloose is occur Georgia, while Herbert Ross’ 1984 original — the film that designed a star from Kevin Sausage and grew to become a pop-culture phenomenon on its own — was occur Oklahoma. Pushing aside all of the “Who must remake Footloose?” arguments which have swirled around previously year — whomever must remake anything? — this new Footloose, while sincere from the original, is bold about staking its claim being an old-fashioned entertainment for age the ipod device. Kenny Wormald, a dancer who was raised in Boston (he was created the entire year the initial was launched), stars as Ren McCormack, a higher schooler who finds themself adopted to the house of his Uncle Wes (a deadpan-jovial Ray McKinnon) after his mother’s dying. The city is known as Bomont, and 3 years before Ren’s arrival, several teens were wiped out inside a vehicle accident following a evening of dancing and, because the high-walking opening montage clearly spells, consuming. In the grief, Reverend Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid), the daddy of among the boys, convinced the town council to prohibit underage dancing within the town. So that as it works out, the reverend’s saucy daughter Ariel (Dwts’ Julianne Hough) may be the first local girl Ren notices upon his arrival. Ren may be the essential good kid: He takes an very unglamorous job in a local cotton mill (its barnlike environs will prove useful later) and rebuffs a redneck stoner who tries, as a means of framework him, to hands him some pot. Still, Ren will get in danger using the local authority figures, including Reverend Moore, who emphatically disapproves of Ren despite the fact that he barely knows the little one. And extremely, all Ren really wants to do is dance. He sets loose his pent-up anger in the local grown-ups — inside a version of Sausage’s original signature pissed-off dance — within an old barn, where he tumbles, scissor-kicks and shifts in the rafters. (He’s a gymnastics kid, too.) Wormald bakes an admirably low-key heartthrob, just like a more sexy version from the youthful John Cryer. With his ruffian pompadour, he'd have checked out home back in 1984 or 1964: Jumping and kicking around that barn in the jeans and whitened Converse, he or she is a Jet straight from West Side Story. That’s the vibe Maker taps so happily here, and the entertainers are unapologetic about directing the “Hey kids, let’s placed on a show!” moxie he asks of these. Hough isn’t as appealing as Wormald is — she's a shrewdly appraising attitude, and she or he doesn’t soften up enough because the movie continues. But her spitfire brassiness is effective enough, particularly when her character gives Ren the bible — filled with relevant underlined verses — he’ll have to persuade the city elders to overturn their no-dance policy. Because he guides us toward that teen barn-burners of the speech, Maker does one hundred small things right: The neighborhood adult who privately enables the children to keep dance parties has the neighborhood drive-in where they spend time, and that he’s a black guy (he’s performed by Maker regular Claude Phillips) — someone’s reached stand towards the city’s unaware, squaresville whitened people. The film’s second bananas — Rusty, performed with a youthful dazzler named Ziah Colon, and Willard, Miles Teller (of Rabbit Hole) — are perfectly cast, plus they’re a part of a mixture of buddies Ren makes in the new town. (Like plenty of youthful us citizens, although not within the movies, Ren dangles by helping cover their pals of races — Ser’Darius Blain plays his buddy Woodsy — without getting a neon “Interracial Friendship” sign hanging overhead.) And merely following the movie’s most misguided character, Quaid’s weatherbeaten reverend, confesses the mistake of his ways before his congregation, he announces the hymn: It’s “Just Like Me,” an audio lesson that talks of humbleness and human frailty, not jubilance. It’s just a little moment of sophistication hidden among the film’s unabashed pop-culture pleasures. After which there’s the dancing: There’s most likely more ho-hum thumping and grinding than there is within the original Footloose, but a lot of the dancing continues to be very exciting to look at — the sequences are exuberant and, fortunately, not cut to laces and ribbons. There’s country line dancing (which Ren describes, with smart-ass affection, as “the whitened guy’s wet dream”), categories of black kids kicking it on the asphalt, and, finally, as soon as when all of the youthful people of Bomont get together on their hard-gained promenade. Whirling and shuffling around the party area, they’ve reclaimed a fundamental pleasure along with a right. Dancing is simply fun. You don’t require a remake of Footloose to help remind you of this — though should you’re at all like me, you most likely can’t recall the before you probably did it yourself.

Johnny Depp Lone Ranger Project Reportedly Back On for Slightly Less Stupid Money
When Disney pulled the plug on its expensive Lone Ranger project, which was to reunite Pirates of the Caribbean cohorts Johnny Depp, Jerry Bruckheimer, and Gore Verbinski, a few industry-watchers held out hope that the studio and the filmmakers would yet still reach an agreement over how many hundreds of millions of dollars the would-be franchise would cost. Almost exactly two months later, it seems they’ve reached that compromise. More stupid money for someone! From Deadline: On Lone Ranger, there has been a lot of behind-the-scenes drama as the three principal players made concessions in their deals, and worked on the script to salvage the spectacle that made the movie worth making in the first place while bringing the budget down to a more manageable figure in the $215 million range. So, not quite the affordable $200 million that Disney reportedly initially wanted, but definitely less costly than the $250 million or more that the production was threatening to cost. $215 million makes it ever so cheaper than all but the last three Pirates movies, which cost a reported $225M (2006’s Dead Man’s Chest), $300M (2007’s At World’s End), and $250M (2011’s On Stranger Tides). It remains to be seen if any further drastic creative changes will be implemented, especially given that naysayers took license at August’s project-halting announcement to blast certain rumored fantastical elements in the script which I won’t spoil here. Consider that a free litmus test, Disney. Deadline’s Mike Fleming thinks it unlikely for Lone Ranger’s initial December 2012 release date to stand, which solves at least one of the five challenges the project faces which Movieline pinpointed last August. But, all things considered, is it wise for Bruckheimer, Disney & Co. to move forward after such a public false start? Weigh in below. ‘The Lone Ranger’ Saddling Up With Johnny Depp And A Tighter Budget [Deadline]

Hungarian SWAT Seize Cache of Functional Assault Rifles to Be Used as World War Z Props
Monday brought more bad news to the reportedly beleaguered production of the zombie flick World War Z, produced by and starring Brad Pitt, when SWAT in Budapest raided a warehouse storing prop guns for the film. The problem: they weren’t props, but fully-functional military-style assault rifles. Oops! Since Pitt is involved, US Weekly has the scoop from Hungary’s Anti-Terrorism Unit on the police raid that uncovered the major slip-up: “This morning a private plane brought guns wrapped in a parcel from a company to an individual [in Budapest],” Janos and Bodnar [said]. “Guns like these are highly illegal to transport even if they were to used as stage guns, which hopefully they weren’t.” According to a source, Pitt, 47, isn’t to blame for the prop problem. “The movie company’s employees must have made a mistake bringing the guns in without the Anti-Terrorism Unit’s permission.” According to the report, the World War Z shoot wasn’t exactly going as planned anyway; it’s “already over budget and over schedule,” according to US Weekly’s source. This weapons pickle will only mean more of a headache for poor Brad. (And how could this kind of mix up happen in the first place? Somewhere, some other dude is puzzled over his shipment of 85 fake plastic guns…) [US Weekly via Cinema Blend] [Photo credit: Images of (unrelated) assault rifles per Getty Images]
